" And Peter satisfies Clement's mind on all things. These are the questions he asks, you see. And so we start out this one with the literalism. I have arranged here, which I have never used before, in chronological order this argument. We only need to touch it at a few points to show what this is. Namely, the things to watch are this.

Again, you can see why. We have to regard the Bible as complete, final and total without one word of error because as soon as we admit that there might be one verse wrong here and there, or something incorrect, then we are in the soup because we never know when a verse is really telling us what we are supposed to learn. Is it right or is it wrong? This leads to all sorts of stuff. After all you have eight thousand ancient manuscripts of the New Testament, and no two are alike. Now which one are you going to follow?

Well, there was a limit here. Allegory could not explain what we have mentioned before, the terrible questions. We go to the first volume of the Patrologia for that. What made them terrible was the insistence on a literal answer. You have to give me a straight, literal answer to this. Allegory can mean what you say it means. We started with the story of Clement in Rome when he was a young fellow. He was the first and oldest writer after the New Testament. We mentioned before there's this great collection, the Patrologia.
