Patrick Cleburne proposed filling the ranks with black men. No American bishop supported extra-political abolition or interference with states' rights before the Civil War. With that caveat, the majority of women probably did make at least a passing reference to the military service of their friends or relations if that was part of their experience of the war. The society organized the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Fair several years before the outbreak of the war.
